Following on from my earlier post regarding NIKKO shirt designs. The original designs were rebranded to FIGHT GAME for an upcoming movie/video game of the same name. Executive producer and NIKKO MD, Bas Boon, asked us to come up with some more designs specifically for the FIGHT GAME brand. In the tutorial I will ‘talk through’ the designs called liberty….

Starting off with another of Noud van Miltenburg’s great illustrations…

My first decision was to bring in the black line illustration and the colour on separate layers, the original colouring wasn’t the correct hue for this shirt and the flames were too literal, so I kept the highlights and shadows and gave it al a blue/grey hue….

The next decision was the background, my concept was to have the statue of liberty climbing out of a distressed chaotic background, this for me was a poiniant image and also had some conatations towards New Yorks recent history. So I wanted to start at the material of the shirt and give that a faded look…

Nouds illustration now needed some loosening up, so using some vectors from our Scribbly Doodles Vector CoolKit
I set about adding a graffitti scribbles…

Not quite enough, a few more needed…

It was beginning to come together now, just a few more to darken the bottom…

The design was taking on a ‘Banksie’ look now, so I decided to add some spray can drips to fortify the graffitti look…

Finally I added the FIGHT GAME branding with some more spray drips…

The finished image was then added to the rest of the range. These Tshirts and hoodies will be available for purchase online very soon, check back to this article soon for more details.

When I was at school, many decades ago in the dark ages. We had a computer room, with a computer. Attached to this computer was all sorts of wires, card punching data storage, a noisy dot matrix printer with sheets of sproket fed paper and a group of nerds that made up the computer club (they are all probably IT multi-millionaires by now!). If you weren’t in the club, you never got a look in. Occasionally, though, long sheets of paper would emerge with images made out of letters and would be pinned up outside the computer room. It was a boys school, so the images tended to be of bikini clad girls or motorbikes and grab the attention they did!

It’s been a long time since I have been reminded of those images, until I stumbled over a website that offers a free service converting any photo on the web to ASCII art. And it does a great job…

The input is easy…

Here are some examples I played around with…

Personally, I think that this technique is due for a revival, I will certainly consider using it in my next design job…. why not?

Visit the website yourself HERE and have some fun……

Windy have been making professional sports fight equipment since the 1950′s. They are one of the world leaders in boxing gloves, pads and shorts. Their European dealer recently asked us if we would be intertested in designing a small (at first) range of Tshirts that could be worn as a gym or fashion item, again, of course we accepted the challenge. The theme was to be Thai with influences toward Tattoo art and Thai boxing (Muay Thai). Also, strangely, they were keen on one being of a heraldic nature. Following the Tshirt range we were also asked to ‘spice’ up the European dealer’s website for a relaunch in 2010.

The Solution

Firstly we contacted our old friend Dong at his Tattoo studio, Dong is a big Thai boxing fan and specialises in Thai dragon and demon (yaak) images.

We selected 5 of Dongs sketches, made a deal and set about designing the shirts. using a mixture of tattoo images, elements from our own Vector CoolKits and some purchased graphics, we set to work. After creating a zillion layers in Photoshop, these are the results.

To make their product unique in the stores and gyms, we designed labels and tags to be added to the shirts….

The Windy dealer was pleased and we were happy to have worked on a unique project such as this. Consequently we have followed the ideas through to MMA shorts and hoodies. The instore graphics and web banners, as you can see, work well with the thai tattoo theme…

So, Windy are back, with a stunning new range of fashion/fight wear, check out their website here…

Classic stationery and airborne adventures…

With the widespread use of Word and inkjet printers, most business tend to generate their own stationery with a logo dropped into their documents. Most don’t realise that it’s a false economy, inkjet inks are expensive!!

CSP Construction MD, Tom Coghlan, wanted something a bit more classic for his tropical construction company. The team at APAGANZA were happy to oblige.

First off we experimented with some logo options, something clean, simple and effective for summing up what Tom’s neat operation was about.

The final contenders (above) where then discussed and the ‘palm leaf’ option was chosen. We really wanted, with the stationery, to get across Tom’s ideals of retaining as much of the local nature as possible in his projects. Something natural and simple was the key.

After hunting through paper samples of Bangkok’s paper suppliers, we chose Tintoretto Malange stock from Italian paper supplier Fedringo. Fedringo have a great reputation for using clean hydro-electric power where possible and are involved in forest replenishing (Every tree taken for pulp, a new one is planted), they also use fast growing plants for their pulp such as cotton, hemp, flax and bamboo. Way to go…

The finished result was stunning, the stationery looked, smelt and felt good and was achieved on a surprising low budget.

The next project, after the stationery, was a decent brochure that would really show the beauty of Tom’s projects. Again we were happy to oblige. The first task was to obtain some good photography. Time for some adventure…. Graphic design is a great profession, intellectually stimulating and rewarding BUT sometimes lacks physical adventure.

Apaganza head honcho, designer, tea boy and sky pest, Ivan Longland, decided that to get some really great shots, it was time to unleash the beast……

This is his La mouette 210cc paramotor trike, quite simply, just sit in, start her up, inflate your wing and you are off to the skies….

Paramotors are ideal for airborne photography, they are relatively stable and with enough height, allow the pilot to fly hands free for short lengths of time to capture some great photography.

So, with a 6 a.m. take off from a local sports field, he was on his way to Tom’s project ‘Coconut Grove’ in Hua Yai district. An hours flight with his sony digital camera firing off in all directions Ivan landed with some stunning results…

That task done, we set about designing the brochure. We decided to use as much local paper as possible and again, keep things looking as natural as possible.

One of our pet hates here is seeing too much obviously computer-generated floor plans and artists impressions of buildings, it sucks! so Tom’s architect ‘Bay’ drew up some great traditional hand-drawn plans and elevations. As for the finished project… you can flick through it yourself… HERE

If you are lucky enough to be interested in having a beautiful home built in Thailand, CSP-Construction are the people to talk to… www.csp-construction.com

I was asked by the owners at Mixx Discotheque in Pattaya, Thailand if we could produce a promotional video for the club.

Of course we accepted the challenge….

The Brief: The client wanted an ‘Ibiza’ style promotional video showing the expensive interior of the club and the fusion of European and Thai customers. Mixx Club is located on Walking Street in Pattaya City, an area reknowned for bars, clubs, restaurants and non-stop entertainment. The competition is fierce between clubs and bars to attract the recent downfall in tourism currently in Thailand.

Working with ex-MTV Editor, Jim Wilson and Keeta Media HD Video in Pattaya we set about the project… We spent 5 nights in the club on different occasions: Mixx 2nd anniversary, Thai Hip Hop star Joey Boy concert, DJ Domination Scratch show, Thai Penthouse magazine fashion show and a “normal” Saturday night. To film the atmosphere of daytime Pattaya we employed a microlight and a speedboat. Six days of filming with a five day edit by Jim in Final Cut Pro, Some graphics contributed by myself and the project was done. The results… Take a look…. WARNING: THIS VIDEO CONTAINS PARTIALLY DRESSED PENTHOUSE MODELS!

Look out for MIXX website redesign in the new year….
